YANBU BEFORE DREAM DIVERS LIVE-ABOARDS  (circa 2000-2004)

For me, these early dive trips to Yanbu were very memorable because they introduced me to Red Sea diving.  The group, generally organized by Colin Knight, would take a Wednesday afternoon Aramco flight and go straight to Yanbu Sharm for a night dive.  The group stayed at the “middle of nowhere” Holiday Inn and used their dive shop and 30’ open dive boats.   The Yanbu Coast Guard were always a hassle, inspecting every dive bag and generally forbade underwater video cameras.   With their rules changing by the whim of the current commandant, one disappointing night dive attempt had women forbidden. You never know what a boat full of people in wet suits might be up to!
